The Miracle Homemade Remedy You Need to Kick Colds Fast
Last year I learned about this super simple homemade remedy for the common cold, allergies, or just feeling lousy. It’s easy to make, cheap, you can make it in advance, and it tastes great! Plus, you can add additional ingredients if you want to make it even more powerful.
Since I am an elementary school teacher and am constantly getting sick (and getting my roommate and best friend sick as a result) I’ve been on the hunt for something easy and organic to have on hand in the household.
Well, I found it! Actually, my best friend did, obviously. She made this homemade remedy tea tincture last year and taught me how to make it (SO EASY!). Now I make it just once or twice a year in bulk to keep in tall mason jars in the fridge.
It’s so handy to have ready for those days when you sneeze the wrong way or a kid coughs in your face and you just know a cold is coming on.
What you need:
- Half a dozen organic lemons
- Fresh organic ginger root
- 32+oz raw organic honey
- Handheld mandoline slicer
- Mason jars for storage
I highly recommend getting everything in organic. Especially the lemons, since you leave the skin on.
If you don’t have a mandolin slicer you can slice everything by hand, but the mandoline makes its WAY easier, especially if you plan on doing 3-4 jars full like I do every time. Plus, it ensures that the food slices evenly for good distribution of the elements. You can experiment a little with the thickness of the slices if you have a mandoline to decide what you like best. You do you, girl!
- Lay out the clean jars and all the ingredients.
- Make sure the honey is in a liquid state. If it is solid and raw, heat it slowly and gently to make it pourable.
- Wash, but don’t peel, the lemons
- Slice up the lemons at about a 1/4” thick
- Wash and gently peel the ginger root, mostly using your fingers. I leave most of the skin on, I just pull off the papery stuff as I wash it.
- Slice up the ginger thinner than the lemons (about 1/16” probably)
7. Layer the lemons and ginger in the jar. Only fill the jar about 3/4ths full. I put in 2-3 lemon slices and then 3-4 thin slices of ginger. Some people prefer more lemon and others lots of ginger. Again, experiment a little
8. Pour the honey slowly over the top and let it ooze through the layers all the way to the bottom. Keep pouring slowly until the lemons and ginger are floating. Leave a little space at the top to prevent overflow!
9. VERY IMPORTANT! Wipe the rim of the jars with a damp cloth before closing. You don’t want the sticky honey to seal this magical malady shut forever.
10. Store lovingly in your fridge until times of sickness befall you.
When you think you might have a slight bug, or if you throat itches suddenly, all you do is reach for a jar of this gooey goodness. Pour yourself some hot water, scoop out a layer of lemons and ginger, then add a few scoops of the liquid gold infused honey on top. Yum!!
Other things you can add to this yummy cold remedy:
- A cinnamon stick
- A teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (also amazing for cold-curing!)
- A splash of whiskey
Enjoy a few cups in a row when you first feel a cold coming on, and then try to drink it morning and night the next day. Hopefully, by then it’s gone!
Enjoy 🙂
